This is the kind of home I want to live in, but its too expensive for me… could I have it built for cheaper? How would I go about having something built?

building a new home may or may not be cheaper than buying one – depends on what you are looking for and what the market is doing at that time
as far as building your own home, i am in the middle of doing so right now. bear in mind i am building in ventura county in southern california, other locations may have slightly different requirements or different timing on certain actions
the first thing you need is vacant land to build on
the second thing you need is house plans. you can buy completed plans or you can hire an architect to draw them up for you
the third step is getting your building permit. if you are using an architect this can be done at the same time as getting your permit. the steps you go to may be one long list of items or it may be broken it two parts – my permit was two parts. part one, things to get done while plans are being prepared. part two, review of plan prior to issuing the permit
step three, part one, plans are being prepared – this may include zone clearance, civil and soils engineering, percolation testing and septic system design (if no sewers) and approval, fire department, water source, school and traffic fees, etc
step three, part two, plan check – this will include review of the house plans, related engineering, electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning, etc
step four, construction – grading and drainage, foundations may be footers or slab, framing, roofing, siding, electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning, flooring (wood, tile, carpet), walls (sheet rock, paint, wallpaper, paneling), etc
throughout construction will be numerous inspections
good luck with whatever you do
