What’s the process in building your own home?

Posted by admin on Aug 1, 2010 under build your own home

If I wanted to one day have a home built from the ground up, what would the process be from start to finish?

Find a lot to build it on and buy it. Find an architect and have him draw up plans and materials lists for they kind of house with the features you want. Hire a contractor….forget it and buy one ready made. Even a new factory built home would be cheaper and easier than a DIY.

building a garage before constructing a home, how do you build your own home?

Posted by admin on Jun 16, 2010 under build your own home

How would I be able to buy a lot and build a large pole shed, or garage type structure, before I build my home I plan to build my home my self and contract out parts that I cant do, after buying the land I assume I get a building permit and start building after preparing the land and having power and light come out as well as city water hook ups, anything else I have to do first, also the town im buiding in does allow you to build a pole shed on a vacant lot, after many years of that shed just sitting there could they ask you to remove it if ordinances change without a home on the lot also is there a minnium size a home has to be in order to build a shed if not allowed, and how big of a shed can I build?

thanks much

I think you need to do a lot more local research before you attempt this. If you don’t even know what your town will allow you to do, you’re not ready. Only your town can answer what you have asked about building the shed first, and yes, many towns have a law that you must complete a home within a certain time after you start to build.

Is there any sites about building your own home security system?

If you want to pay to have your own home built, where do you start?

Posted by admin on Jun 5, 2010 under build your own home

Almost everyone has a dream home. I sure do. I would some day, in the near future, have someone build it for us. Where do you start? Is it as simple as buying land and hiring a contractor to build it? Or is there way more than that to it?

Financing is the first thing. Then I would go to a local lumberyard and ask some questions. They’ll give you the names of some good contractors. You’ll probably need to get some plans drawn up before you contact the contractor. A good draftsman is much more inexpensive than an architect. The local lumberyard will most likely be able to give you the name of a good draftsman as well.

building a new home may or may not be cheaper than buying one – depends on what you are looking for and what the market is doing at that time

as far as building your own home, i am in the middle of doing so right now. bear in mind i am building in ventura county in southern california, other locations may have slightly different requirements or different timing on certain actions

the first thing you need is vacant land to build on

the second thing you need is house plans. you can buy completed plans or you can hire an architect to draw them up for you

the third step is getting your building permit. if you are using an architect this can be done at the same time as getting your permit. the steps you go to may be one long list of items or it may be broken it two parts – my permit was two parts. part one, things to get done while plans are being prepared. part two, review of plan prior to issuing the permit

step three, part one, plans are being prepared – this may include zone clearance, civil and soils engineering, percolation testing and septic system design (if no sewers) and approval, fire department, water source, school and traffic fees, etc

step three, part two, plan check – this will include review of the house plans, related engineering, electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning, etc

step four, construction – grading and drainage, foundations may be footers or slab, framing, roofing, siding, electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning, flooring (wood, tile, carpet), walls (sheet rock, paint, wallpaper, paneling), etc

throughout construction will be numerous inspections

good luck with whatever you do

ok then where is the best place to build your own private home on your own land in georgia without HOA?

ANY SUGGESTIONS

Your original question said you wanted to be close to Atlanta. Can’t really help you there since most of that land is gone or very pricey and I don’t know your range.

If you don’t mind the commute, I would look at Paulding or Cherokee County. Personally, I am a big fan of Cobb County due to its location and schools. There are plenty of places still available.

While I hesitate to offer my services for fear of spamming, you can certainly visit the website below and do your own search. My contact info can be found there.

Best of luck.

What are the best products (shelving, et al) to buy to build your own scrapbooking station at home?

Posted by admin on May 25, 2010 under build your own home

I’m not looking for totes or anything for portable scrapbooking. I want to build a scrapbooking work center in my home office. What are the best products (shelving, cubes, etc) to use? And where can I find them? Thank you for your help!

Brand new in my Micheal’s store this month are Making Memories cubes, drawers (2) and turntable table top organizers. The cubes and drawers fit together and stack together. All are white and are made of MDF. Prices are good but the cubes only have 2 or 3 compartments. They also have a huge, lovely, white wall shelf. It’s a bout 4 inches deep and holds jars and stuff with 2 paper towel like holders for ribbon spools to spin freely on. Looks really nice. That’s what I would do but depending on how your paper is organized, you may need lots of cubes to separate colours etc. Good luck!

Alright, is it cheaper to build your own home or hire some people to do it for you?

Posted by admin on May 19, 2010 under build your own home

I’m planning on building my dream home (forget buying it!) from the ground up, but my boyfriend told me that it’d cost less money if I built it myself instead of hiring a team of professionals to help along. But I say that it’d be quicker if we go with the latter.

So, is it cheaper for me to just do this myself? If so, um, where can I learn? XD

Anything you save would probably be undone by mistakes and code violations that would require redoing it. Sorry.

Oh, you might see if you can get the local cable co. to go ahead and route fiber into your home. It’s the coming thing and having fiber already run will simplify getting fiber TV and internet later on.

If you MUST do it yourself, get back issues of "Backwoods Home Magazine" on CD, lots of articles there. It’s not just for rural people, city folk can use the same info! Do NOT confuse with Back Home Magazine, though. One thing though, if there is an article about something you need to know, always follow up by reading the reader’s replies in the next issue. A lot of good info and corrections there. BHM works hard at getting everything just right but they have been known to print a dud article once in a while. I remember one issue with info about running gas lines. From the reader’s responses the following month, I got the impression that the article had been written by Moe, Larry, and Curly!
