What are universities with good interior design programs?

Posted by admin on Aug 6, 2010 under interior design

I want to get a bachelor’s degree in interior design. I absolutely DO NOT want to go to an art/design school. I want a large, well rounded university with lots of options like the university of texas. I have a few schools in mind, I just wanted to explore my options.

Also, I know some schools want to see a portfolio with your application, so if you could let me know if the school requires that or not, that would be awwwwesome.

Look into large universities in your home state. They will be your best bet and they will not cost an arm and a leg. It is good to see someone with their head screwed on straight for once. A large state university will offer you the well rounded education that you hope to earn and you will have many options most large state universities have over 150 majors to chose from and wonderful study abroad programs! I hope this helps good luck with finding a good school!

Is it possible to get into fashion design with an interior design degree? What do I need to do?

Posted by admin on Jul 14, 2010 under interior design

I am currently an interior design major but I really want to do all sorts of design like design interiors AND do fashion. Do I need to go to grad school? What do I need to do to be able to do both?? THANK YOU!

Get an entry-level job in a fashion house. Network, until you find one, and more importantly, someone who can tell you what they are looking for in the portfolios they look at. There are, believe it or not jobs out there. Not all creative ones, but you’ll have your foot in the door.

Marketing my interior design business to Contractors?

Posted by admin on May 31, 2010 under interior design

I am an Interior Designer who would like to specialize in helping contractors design new homes (presold or spec). I currently work for a design center that offers cabinets, carpet, tile, hardood & slab countertops. I feel that I could be a single source for a contractor to go to for design help (since a lot of them don’t want to deal with this end of it). I could also select paint colors, appliances, lighting & plumbing fixtures.
I would love any ideas on how to market contractors!

Good Idea, Erika!

My late mother really broke into that market when she did a "Street of Dreams" home. This is where high end contractors build a number of spec homes and dress them to the hilt. They get more "lookers" and therefore, future contracts. Mom got a great deal of exposure, too and formed a relationship with that builder that lasted a lifetime.

Check with any/all building contractor organizations in the area, or large Realtors or perhaps even Building Supply centers. I believe the one she was involved with, was arranged through a large Realtor, who owned a large plot they were subdividing… The Street of Dreams was at the front and the rest of the lots were "for sale".
